My Journey to Teaching

I have always had a great interest in learning martial arts. At age 6, I knew it would play a big role in my life but I could never imagine where this passion would ultimately lead to. As I got older I tried many different arts such as Kajukenbo, Judo and Choi li fut. However those arts, although great, were never able to capture my heart and imagination for the martial arts. I wanted to practice something that would open my mind to greater possibilities that seemed attainable through hard work and dedication. I wanted an art that would break me down mentally and therefore re-purpose my physical responses to a higher level. I desperately wanted more than to follow a script of block, strike and kick to a set attack in practice. Years go by and I am feeling that I may never find that pot of gold that could end my search. Then, one unassuming night, I went to visit a Wing Chun school and met my eventual teacher Sifu Tak See Ma who was teaching the Wong Sheung Lung lineage of Wing Chun kung fu. It specialized in close quarter combat, sort of like chinese boxing if compared to western boxing. I had been around long enough martial arts to recognize that Sifu Ma was well learnt and that was verified by watching his students train. I now had renewed hope that maybe, just maybe I had found what I was searching for all these years. A system that was very aggressive and fit my psychological mindset. I joined the very next class and began my journey into Wing Chun. Training this art in the beginning can be tough on most people solely because it is slow and arduous. This is because students must learn the abc's of it's core movements before they can progress onward. It is essential to practicing Wing Chun concepts.

This is the time I see many people come and go because they either become bored or think they are not learning enough. But I say this period of time is crucial to development! It is the MOST crucial time to stick with the training and not quit. Wing Chun is akin to learning in layers. As you peel one layer away you will see more. As you peel more away you will keep learning more and more. And as I have watched and learned over the years, this notion or thought rings true. These realizations enabled me to see another way of practicing martial arts. I will always train and keep learning. But now, my passion has evolved to furthering my Sifu's teachings by becoming a teacher myself. I want to be that resource for whoever wishes to learn authentic Hong Kong style Wing Chun. I want them to enjoy practicing martial arts far more than just for the self defense aspect. So if you have decided to learn Wing Chun kung fu, I teach in San diego. Lets Train!
